All,
I ran into John and BJ Little of Winchester today and they reported hearing
a Eurasion Collared Dove while at the small bridge/ culvert on Faughts road.
They were on there way to Leonard's Pond and stoped at the bridge and heard
the Dove calling. They were positive about the call. They tried locating the
bird but w/o success. I was out of time so I couldn't look either. So anyone
birding Leonard's might want to keep their eyes out for this species.
I myself spent the morning up at South River Falls where as luck would have
it I hit a nice flock of Warblers, Tanagers and such right at the picnic
area on the East side. There was plenty of food sources including Wild
Grapes, Blackberry and several others.... I think I ended up with only 8
species but the numbers were good which admittedly are something of a
guessing game since one can't really be sure you are counting a different
Cerulean then the last one. But the birds seem to working their way down the
row and I tried to mainly stay put.
In addition to all these wonderful birds tallied about 7 butterfly species
including a lifer and also saw a Black Bear. The Bear seemed grizzled on the
back and haunches and appeared simply huge in the binoculars at ~ 100 yards
or so. He was big as life one minute and gone the next. It always amazes me
how quiet they are. You would think an animal that size couldn't just appear
in front of you with out being heard.... but I can't recall ever hearing a
bear before seeing one.
Later at Leonard's and then on to Western View I found a handful of Least,
and Solitary Sandpipers and 1 Spotted Sandpiper. There was one Peep at
Western View that might have been either a Semi or Western but I couldn't
determine for sure and I was plum out of time. So I am leaving it as
unidentified. His/her behavior was unusual in that she kept running around
chasing all the other Peeps .... and I have read recently that
Semipalmateds are quite teritorial and aggressive.
