VA-Birders: I echo Paula's admiration for Bruce Peterjohn's description and am in awe of his expertise. Thanks to Larry Meade for posting.

I photographed this bird last Wednesday and enjoyed looking at it, without having the slightest idea of whether it was a Rufous or Allen's Hummingbird.

Many thanks to Bruce Peterjohn for his very detailed explanation of how he identified the hummingbird at Green Spring Gardens as a hatch year female Rufous. (And thanks, too, to Larry Meade for posting it.) Every question I had was answered completely. Fortunately, most bird identifications aren't quite this challenging, but when they are, it's very instructive to learn from an expert just how it is done.
