As Les mention, Richmond Audubon took at trip to Warbler Road this past
Saturday, the 9th. It was my first time visiting the site, so many thanks
to Darrell Peterson for leading the trip. Darrell has a great deal of
experience there and he put us right on many of the birds.
Our experienced was different from Les' trip the day before. We started at
the top above Sunset Fields Overlook and headed down the mountain stopping
frequently. Most of the expected breeders were in good numbers but we did
not find many migrants. That could be attributed to us making it to the
lower roads once it was already hot. American Redstart was the most common
bird with several singing at almost every place we stopped. Cerulean
Warblers were in good number as were Canada Warblers in the upper reaches.
We had more than few misses but never noticed because of the abundance of
birds.
We birded down to the James and along solitude swamp which helped get our
total up. The three lists below.

Well, I sure gave it a long try but (there's that word again) a bit on the
tough side for finding birds. I sure hope Richmond Audubon fared better on
Saturday! I pulled out of my driveway at 3:20 A.M. figuring the early bird
story. But the worms must have slept late. Got home about 7 P.M. At the
end of the day I had a good laugh when I thought about a fishing buddy's
tall tale. We had run my boat about 160 miles, finally got back to the
marina around 10 P.M. or so and had only two fish in the box! He turned
and said to me "I know now I should have said something this morning!". To
which I replied "What?! What are you talking about?" He said "I noticed
this morning the cows were facing the wrong way but man, I didn't want to
say anything. I stopped laughing about 5 minutes later with tears running
down my face! We finished cleaning the fish and boat, gave the filets to a
friend who was stuck inside and went home happy! Such is life.
So, after all that what did I see? One adult Male Scarlet Tanager, two
Brown Headed Cowbirds, One Black-Throated Blue Warbler, one Red-Tailed
Hawk, three Turkey Vulture, maybe two Red-Eyed Vireo, a Thrust of some
type. (As soon as I moved the camera it took off. It was near a beautiful
stream coming down the mountain.) and lastly, what looked like a Cuckoo. I
did the trail (forest road) twice, from top to bottom, drove the road to
Apple Orchard Falls entrance and ran well pass Roanoke, on the parkway,
thinking maybe they were further south. Just wasn't my day.
