John
leonards is still accessable to birders but the shorebirds have not been
numerous the last several weeks. I have not been by since leaving for
chincoteague last sunday so maybe the scene has imprved a bit.

Subject: [Va-bird] Shorebird migration
A Red-necked Stint that just showed up in Texas reminded me that July is when
migrating shorebirds start showing up. I think Ned posted something to that
effect some years ago. Photos of the Stint are at
http://smu.gs/lqmgH9 ;
so we know what to look for, LOL.
The notion of looking for mudflats in the piedmont is still passing strange,
but I don't think any shorebirds are strictly coastal/salt water. That
Sand-plover was in Staunton. Does anyone know if Leonard's Pond is still a
viable spot? I'm planning a mammal trip to the area and will go by if nothing
has changed.
OT, but I had two White-footed Deermice in my yard a couple nights ago, they
came to black oil sunflower seeds and tolerated the porch light so I could
get photos. Quite surprising!
What's out there? is an endlessly fascinating question, IMHO.
Good birds,
