Hi,
I happened to be birding Riverbend at the same time as the club. When the walk
was over I ran into Larry Meade.
I can add 1 or 2 Great Egrets to birds sighted at the park today. One flew
upriver and an hour later an an egret flew downriver. A Baltimore Oriole nest
hangs over the water in a Sycamore near the boat ramp. I saw both adults and
heard nestlings.

Subject: [Va-bird] NVBC Trip to Riverbend Park
This morning 12 people showed up for the NVBC led trip to Riverbend Park in
Northern Virginia. The group led by Larry Meade and myself enjoyed a very
pleasant morning along the Potomac River north of Great Falls. We managed to
tally close to 54 species. During our walk we had a brief moment of
excitement when we thought that we saw a Lesser Scaup. However, the light
was playing tricks with us. It was a Ring-necked Duck. Still a nice
sighting. We ended up seeing 6 Ring-necked Ducks on the river as well as a
female Wood Duck with 4 ducklings. Northern Parula's were heard many times
during the walk but seldom seen. Close to the boat ramp we found a breeding
pair of Louisiana Waterthrushes. The birds were busy distracting us and
foraging. We got some splendid looks of these guys. A lone Red-shouldered
Hawk obligingly sat in the tree along the trail and we got some really nice
look of him/her because the bird took off again. Wood Thrushes were very
quiet in the morning but after 10 am they woke up and started to sing. As
always it is very pleasant to listen to the wood Thrush sing while walking
in the forest. Our best bird of the day was a Black-crowned Night Heron.
This bird was seen on the MD side of the river but still we saw it.
