We only saw the Nighthawk for maybe ten seconds before it disappeared behind
some trees.? There was a Sharpie in the area, so perhaps the Nighthawk had been
disturbed from its roost.

Curious about the Nighthawk flying midday. I saw that in South Dakota in
June a few years ago and, once I got over the surprise, figured it was
related to breeding. But I really don't know. Anyone know what the deal is??

Thanks,?

Twelve birders came out for a Northern Virginia Bird Club walk at
Huntley Meadows. The highlight of the trip was a great performance by
the flying Redheaded Woodpecker family that has taken up residence in
the area of the tall snags down the informal trail past the
observation tower. We watched two adults and four juveniles fly back
and forth while keeping up a steady stream of chatter. They also
obligingly posed for us allowing us to get excellent looks at them.
Other birds of note include a Common Nighthawk flying around in broad
daylight, several Swamp Sparrows, a Winter Wren, and many Eastern
Bluebirds. Two birders from the group came across an Ovenbird and a
Wood Thrush near the Visitor Center.?
