We had a "maybe?" Winter Wren at Long Branch Nature Center in Arlington Friday
9/25, and this morning I heard the first calls of White-throated Sparrow in my
back yard, but didn't get a positive visual ID and always a little hesitant to
say 100%.
All of a sudden the local Gray Catbirds seem to have disappeared. This is a
little earlier than usual (10/7 seems typical).
I found a foraging flock of American Robins in an area recently cleared of a
dense carpet of English Ivy at LBNC. While not an exciting species of bird,
still it is gratifying to see them using an area that was "denied territory" to
them before. And I hope the general birding will improve over time if the
habitat gets more local native natural.
After last year being the year with no acorns, this year the acorn crop and
other mast producers seems bountiful, and lots of wildlife seem to be liking
that.
Cheers,
Steve

Subject: [Va-bird] Occoquan Bay NWR winter wren, white-crowned sparrow
I birded Occoquan NWR this morning, and there were
a few nice birds around.? The biggest surprise was a winter wren along the
river.? This is the earliest I have ever seen one in northern
Virginia.? Other notables were juvenile white-crowned sparrow, swamp
sparrow, about 25 phoebes (really pushing through), northern waterthrush, Cape
May warbler, blackpoll warbler, Swainson's thrush, blue grosbeak, about 30
pied-billed grebes on the river,?and solitary sandpiper on the
pond?next to the parking lot.??
