Thirty Northern Virginia Bird Club birders came out for a chilly, but not
yet frigid, morning at Huntley Meadows Park in Fairfax County. The walk
was led by David Ledwith and by me. We tallied 44 species and had several
nice sightings. Early in the morning before the walk officially began,
several people saw a large flock of Tundra Swans fly over the parking lot.
A bit later, an early rising Red-tailed Hawk was also spotted circling
around. As we headed down the trail, we found a pair of Red-headed
Woodpeckers in the woods just before the entrance to the boardwalk. Later,
a juvenile was spotted in the same general area. Other highlights included
a nice collection of waterfowl which included Gadwall, Northern Shovelers
and Northern Pintails. We had good looks at some sparrows even though there
was not a great deal of diversity. Rusty Blackbirds flew over and flocks
of Common Grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds flew around the wetland.
