Just wanted you all to know that this amazing feat was done by two excellent
birders under 18 years old, one finishing his freshman year in college, the
other finishing his freshman year in high school. Tim spent days (weeks?)
preparing and scouting.  As always, he did his homework well and it paid off.
Will they break the record next year?

Although we (Nick Newberry and Tim Hodge) did not
break the record of 178 species, we still had an excellent day ending with 170
species. We got started a little late and did not have time to check the Blue
Ridge Parkway Pioneer Farm for woodcocks. At around dawn we were in Highland
County on Alleghany Road headed to Locust Springs, however there was a tree
down
across the road, and it cost us nearly an hour detouring around it. This delay
necessitated skipping a couple locations, costing us several species. We birded
Rt. 642, Alleghany Rd., Rt. 640, Bear Mountain, Rt. 631, and Ramseys Draft
in Highland and Augusta County, we then headed down to the Eastern Shore, where
we stopped at Island 1 on the CBBT, Eastern Shore on Virginia NWR, Seaside Dr.,
Magotha Rd., Willis Wharf, Chincoteague, and Saxis. Big misses include Gadwall,
Brown Pelican, Cattle Egret, American Kestrel, Sora, Spotted Sandpiper,
American
Woodcock, Black-billed Cuckoo, Whip-poor-will, Belted Kingfisher,
Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker, Acadian Flycatcher, White-eyed Vireo, Yellow-throated Vireo,

Warbler, Waterthrushes, Kentucky Warbler, Hooded Warbler, Canada Warbler,
Summer
Tanager, and Bobolink. I want to thank Mrs. Newberry, for being the designated
driver. I also want to thank all the va-birders who responded to my species
