VA Birders,
Many thanks to Ed Eder, who sent me a note this morning telling me he had
seen the Common Moorhen and photographed it about 10:00 am. I'm glad it was
the only report I read before I went looking for it! I got to Huntley Meadows
about 1:30 pm this afternoon, and spent nearly 2 hours looking for the moorhen
without success. About 3:30 pm, when I was ready to give up and go home, I met
David Ledwith, who had also been looking for the bird. We started walking back
on the Boardwalk, and between the spot where it splits and the high point, I
looked out into the first row of cattails and saw the red forehead shield in a
break in the cattails! Sure enough, it was the moorhen, and we both got fairly
good looks at it. It was a Life Bird for David, and the first moorhen I had
seen in Virginia in at least 2 or 3 years. After watching it for several
minutes, until it disappeared back into the thicker cattails, we started
walking out when we saw Larry Meade coming to look for the bird. David took
him back to where we had seen it, and apparently, a few minutes later, David
told me, it came out in full view for them, so they were both able to
photograph it. Good luck to anyone who goes to look for it tomorrow. If you
go, be sure to look at Ed Eder's lovely pictures of the Common Moorhen in the
Visitor Center, which will be open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday.
Good birding,

I was at Huntley from 11 am till 1 pm today and I did not see it. Also, other
birders I encountered had not seen it either.

VA Birders,
Did anyone look for the Common Moorhen at Huntley Meadows Park today? If
so, did you find it? I'd like to look for it tomorrow if it might still be
there. Thanks in advance for any information anyone can give me on this bird.
