All,
Did some birding in Augusta county and Rockingham County this morning. Along
610 behind the Hawkwatch at Afton I found tons of White-throated sparrows
and several Chipping, and Song and ateast 1 Field Sparrow as well as good
numbers of Towhees. I have never seen so many sparrows in one place
unfortunately I didn't attempt to count them as I was principally looking
for Warblers. .. but the numbers were high 50-100 birds ...just a very rough
estimate. There is a whole side of a mountain across from the Swananoa Gulf
Course that has been sprayed or something and all the vegetation is pretty
much brown and dead but apparently the sparrows found this exceptable
habitat.
Further down the road I found Blackpoll, Palm, Black-throated Blue and Green
Warblers and several Woodpecker species including Sapsucker. Apparently I
just missed seeing a Bobcat as another local birder (Robert) just minutes
behind me on 610 had one cross the road just in front of him....
Anyway back at the Hawkwatch the Raptors were moving nicely with nice looks
at two Merlins and an adult Red-shouldered Hawk... as well as many Sharpys
and several Coopers....
After the Hawk watch I stopped at Leonard's pond on the way home just to
check what was around and lucked upon a White-rumped Sandper. I phoned up
Greg Moyers and he came by and took some photos. Aslo present were at least
one Least Sandpiper and a Solitary Sandpiper and a couple of Savanah
Sparrows.
Sincerely,
William Leigh
