A Junco on the niger seed feeder was a first for me today, too. I also
discovered why they are called "snow birds". They seem to love the snow.
While all the other birds were vying for positions on the portions of the
deck I had cleared, the Juncos were all over the snowy parts, sitting on the
snow and digging in it. All my regulars were here today but for one
surprise. Eight Cardinals (5 males and 4 females) landed all at once on my
deck. Their colors were brilliant against the white and black of the
surroundings. For the last several months I have only had the resident pair
showing up. The "flock" did not stay long. Sadly they arrived after most
of the food was eaten. Later I put out their favorite - Safflower - but
they didn't return. Another surprise was the lack of squirrels except for
one loner early this morning.

we are really hungry and observant, and will bend the rules once in a
