As I waded through the wonderful woods and neighbohood today in Oakton most of
the birds were concentrated at the yards with feeders Some yards had as many
as 12 cardinals. At the golf course were 5 bluebirds. Flocks of robins were
in the bradford pears and other fruit trees/shrubs. 18 cedar waxwings flew
through the blowing snow, an immature cooper's hawk headed towards a yard with
feeders, flying waist-high, a phoebe chirped and wagged its tail at a home near
a creek, 2 golden-crowned kinglets were in some Virginia pines along the way,
and several cardinals were in a greenbrier and honeysuckle thicket where there
were plenty of berries. Woodpeckers were scarce;I heard only a couple
red-bellieds, and saw none. Also heard only 2 carolina wrens calling from the
shelter of some snow-coated thickets. One junco was eating grass seeds from a
wisp of grass above the snow, but the other couple dozen I saw were at feeders.

I had a flock of juncos eating both from scatter seed on the ground and fro a
oiled sunflower seed feeder. Eating fro the feeder is not unusual behavior for
juncos coming to my feeders.

neighbor's feeders did provide me with
a half-dozen goldfinches,
a white-throated sparrow,
a half-dozen dark-eyed juncos,
two cardinals (M&F),
and at least one song sparrow.
It was the first time in my 18 years of birding that I'd seen juncos go up
to and land on and use feeders. In the years when I was allowed to have
feeders in my yard, they always stayed on the ground - or on the snow.
No partridges, and no pear trees, at least at this location.
There was also another bird that I photographed but did not recognize.
