Take a look at http://www.oiseaux-birds.com/card-common-moorhen.html and ;
http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/rsg/profile.html?action=elementDetail&selectedElement=ABNME13010
which mention diving behavior

Subject: [Va-bird] moorhen question
This aft. was driving slowly by one of our neighborhood lakes, saw a single
bird swimming, and thought "finally a coot". Then saw the bright orange shield
on face, exactly as pictured in Sibley. I had my binos on him at about 30-40
ft.
The only problem is that it dived and came up about 10 feet away. I find
nothing in three books that indicates diving behavior.
Would appreciate help with this seeming contradition. Help? This is my first
moorhen.
Thanks.
