Allen,
I believe it was an adult female. It was certainly not a male. It was brown
with brown streaking on the breast, which I believe is indicative of an adult
female versus a juvenile bird. I was amazed how many Indigo Buntings we saw.
There seemed to always be one singing within earshot! I had no idea we had any
book breakers, cool!

Hi all,
Vic Laubach and I birded throughout Augusta County for a full 11 hours
yesterday, June 17.
We started out early (around 6:30 am) at Augusta Springs Wetlands. There we
found highlights: 2 vireos (Blue-headed & Red-eyed), Yellow-billed Cuckoo,
Ovenbird, Louisiana Waterthrush, and Yellow-breasted Chat. The chat gave
wonderful looks, the best looks I've ever had of this species.
From Augusta Springs Wetlands we worked our way up and over North Mountain on
Hite Hollow Road, all the way to Deerfield. During our 2 hours on Hite
Hollow Road we found highlights: Red-shouldered Hawk, 2 Yellow-billed
Cuckoos, 6 Acadian Flycatchers, 1 Yellow-throated and 27 Red-eyed Vireos,
warblers (29 Ovenbird, 4 Worm-eating, 4 Louisiana Waterthrush, 6
Black-and-white, 1 Hooded, 2 Northern Parula, 1 Black-throated Blue, and 2
Black-throated Green), 12 Scarlet Tanagers, and 1 Rose-breasted Grosbeak. A
non-bird highlight was the sighting of 2 Red Foxes on Hite Hollow Road near
Deerfield.
We drove Deerfield Valley Road from Deerfield to Old Parkersburg Turnpike and
found 3 Northern Parulas, and our only-of-day House Sparrows.
We took Old Parkersburg Turnpike back over North Mountain and found
highlights: 5 Acadian Flycatchers, 9 Red-eyed Vireos, 1 Wood Thrush, and
warblers (12 Ovenbird, 6 Worm-eating, 1 Black-and-white, 1 Hooded, 1
Cerulean, 1 Northern Parula, and 1 Pine).
After we finished at Old Parkersburg Turnpike we headed over to the Swoope
area and spent a wonderful 3 hours and found 62 species. Highlights
included: Northern Bobwhite (Livick Road), adult and young Bald Eagle at
nest, Northern Harrier (Cattleman Road), Ruby-throated Hummingbird,
Red-headed Woodpecker (North Mountain Road), swallows (2 No. Rough-winged, 40
Tree, 67 Barn, and 1 Cliff), warblers (1 Common Yellowthroat, 1 Am. Redstart,
4 Yellow), 2 Blue Grosbeaks (North Mountain Road), 4 Dickcissels (all along
Cattleman Road between "downtown" Swoope and Livick Road), and 3 Bobolinks.
From Swoope we made a quick run through of Bells Lane on our way to Stuarts
Draft. Along Bells Lane we found a Cooper's Hawk.
Along Guthrie Road we added 3 Horned Larks and 2 Vesper Sparrows to our day
list. Behind the Cheese Shop we ticked Purple Martin as a day bird.
At the Stuarts Draft Wastewater Treatment Plant we found our 6th swallow
species for the day, Bank Swallow. Vic and I had good looks of 2 Bank
Swallows.
At Quillen's we added Great Blue Heron and our until-then nemesis bird for
the day, Red-bellied Woodpecker.
At the InVista Ponds in Waynesboro we found our last new bird for the day, a
Belted Kingfisher. This was our 97th species for the day, a number that both
Vic & I were very impressed with given that it is mid-June!
