Bobwhites have been a hot topic....just thought I'd add my two cents' worth.
Having never heard a bobwhite in Richmond or suburban Chesterfield in the past
28 years, I've seen/heard two in my neighborhood in the past two weeks! Saw on
eBird a number of sightings in the areas surrounding the greater Richmond area,
but have never known them to be suburban birds. Maybe they're following in the
footsteps of osprey and red shouldered hawks.

While having breakfast on the deck, my wife and I heard a Bobwhite calling.
It sounded to be just a couple houses over but we couldn't find it visually.
I think it is a first for the yard in the 12 years we have been here. Very
exciting to hear one of our favorite birds. Unfortunately, Bobwhites have
been few and far between for quite some time.

I did it again; forgot my location. We are in Hampton. And I checked and it
isn't the first bobwhite for the yard. But it had been several years.

Hello VA Birders,
Driving back from a wonderful day participating in the VSO Foray, Phil Kenny
spotted a male STFL on the power line on Rt 30. This was at about 5:20pm
6/14. We stopped, took some pictures, and eBirded it. The location was a few
100 yards west past Rt 604, maybe 2 miles or so into King William county.
Bird was still on the wire when we left after 5 minutes.
Cheers,
Russ

Went with Dave Boltz to Waynesboro in hopes of sighting the Purple Gallinule.
Arrived @ 9 AM to Orchard Oriole in song, and stayed til about 3 PM, except
for a brief lunch run, during which another birder manned the post. No Purple
Gallinule either in the "pond" or upstream from the foot bridge. Plenty of
other bird activity however. Several juv. C. Grackles bathing and begging
for food; young N. Flickers chasing Mom; Grackles chasing Cooper's Hawk;
several Cedar Waxwings flying about.

To add to the good news celebrating this fine species, we heard a Bobwhite
calling tonight at Manassas Battlefield NP, in the Matthews Hill tall grass
field (NE corner of Route 29 and Route 234).

One morning this week I visited Conway Robinson State Forest in Prince
William County. An adult male Eastern Bluebird sang for several minutes from
a high snag in a tree.
This is noteworthy because why?
This particular State Forest is well named. It is a thick, full forest. Not
a completely mature canopy, but tall trees everywhere. There is no open
space anywhere - no fields, no meadows, you can hardly see the sky. The
bluebird's snag was smack in the middle of the trail area, several hundred
yards (at least) from any open space.
I can only guess that the general wisdom about bluebird habitat can have
exceptions; or else maybe somehow this adult was dealing with recent
fledglings who somehow had wound up moving into the forest from some (not
very nearby) open area.

You may remember the post I recently made about raising two nestling pileated
woodpeckers, and provided links to photos from hatchling to eyes just
beginning to open.
Well folks, it's time for me to eat some crow! These guys turned out NOT to
be pileated woodpeckers, but are probably red-bellied woodpeckers! I was
wrong in my ID, which I based solely on their large size as hatchlings and
their fast rate of growth and weight gain in the first few days. I apologize
for the error. The good news is that they have been a joy to raise and both
are doing great. Here is their pic taken one week (6/11/14) after the last
pics I posted.
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj193/humnchirp/songbirds/RedBellies_zpscdaee92f.jpg
They are even more beautiful now, and although still being hand fed, they are
beginning to explore the logs in their enclosure.
As requested, I will post one more pic of them just before they are released
when they are self-feeding and fully-flighted juveniles.
Thank you all for your kind comments about these amazing birds. Again,
sorry for the misidentification.
