Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, July 19, at

Top birds this week are BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK in VA and
WHITE-FACED IBIS in MD.
Other birds of interest include ducks, NORTHERN BOBWHITE, LEAST
BITTERN, LITTLE BLUE HERON, ibis, MISSISSIPPI KITE, shorebirds, terns,
CHUCK-WILLS-WIDOW, CLIFF SWALLOW, PROTHONOTARY WARBLER, SEDGE WREN and
DICKCISSEL.
A male BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK was foraging for food on the
Wildlife Loop at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA on July 16, 17 and
18.
An Ibis trifecta (WHITE, WHITE-FACED and GLOSSY) was at Truitt's
Landing, Worcester Co, MD on July 16. The WHITE-FACED IBIS was seen
again on July 17 at Truitt's and E A. Vaughn WMA.
A hen NORTHERN PINTAIL joined the continuing male CANVASBACK at the
Swan Creek dredge containment facility, Anne Arundel Co, MD on July
13. A male RUDDY DUCK in breeding plumage was also present. The male
RUDDY DUCK remains at the McMillan Reservoir, DC, seen on July 13.
A NORTHERN BOBWHITE was at Occoquan Bay NWR, Prince William Co, VA on
July 17.
A LEAST BITTERN was calling at Truitt's Landing on July 16. Three
LITTLE BLUE HERONS were at Oxbow Lake Nature Preserve, Anne Arundel
Co, MD on July 16.
A WHITE IBIS was noted at the intersection of Judes Ferry Road and
Rte. 60 in Powhatan Co, VA on July 14. Two WHITE IBIS flew over a yard
in Staunton, Augusta Co, VA and another WHITE IBIS was at the Dulles
Greenway Wetlands Mitigation Project, Loudoun Co, VA on July 16.
The MISSISSIPPI KITE, found last week In Charles Co, MD, near DuBois
Rd & MD6, was seen again on July 17 west of the intersection of DuBois
and Meredith. A MISSISSIPPI KITE flew over a house on Meadow Rue Lane,
west of the King's Park subdivision, Fairfax Co, VA on July 18.
A trickle of returning shorebirds has begun including SPOTTED,
SEMIPALMATED and LEAST SANDPIPERS at Swan Creek dredge containment
facility on July 13. A probable juvenile WILLET was seen at Chesapeake
Bay Environmental Center, Grasonville, Queen Anne's Co, MD on July 18.
A trip to Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co, MD on July 18 located 11
species of shorebirds including AMERICAN AVOCET, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER,
SPOTTED, SEMIPALMATED, WESTERN, LEAST, PECTORAL and STILT SANDPIPERS
plus SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. An estimated 1,500 shorebirds were on
Poplar Island, Talbot Co, MD on July 17 including WESTERN, LEAST and
STILT SANDPIPERS and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS.
A BLACK TERN was resting on a sandbar close to the Visitor Center in
Swan Cove, Chincoteague NWR, on July 17. A total of 1,190 ROYAL TERN
chicks were banded at Clump Island, Accomack Co, VA on July 14. Two
immature SANDWICH TERNS were on pilings near an observation platform
at New Point Wharf, Matthews Co, VA on July 15.
A vocal CHUCK-WILLS-WIDOW was at Truitt's Landing early on July 16.
More than twelve CLIFF SWALLOWS were flying over Brighton Dam,
Howard/Montgomery Co, MD on July 16. At least 10 CLIFF SWALLOWS were
at the bridge over Prettyboy Reservoir, Baltimore Co, MD also on July
16.
Two PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS were at Patapsco Pond #8 in Baltimore Co, MD
on July 16.
At least three SEDGE WRENS were singing in the New Hope area on Rte.
608, Augusta Co, VA on July 12.
DICKCISSELS are still being seen throughout the reporting area, but in
rapidly decreasing numbers.
Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the MDOsprey,
VA-Bird, West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.
