Top birds this week include BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCK in DE and MD,
ARCTIC TERN in MD and RED-COCKADED WOODPECKER in VA.
Birds of interest during this week include BOBOLINK, BROWN PELICAN,
AMERICAN and LEAST BITTERN, CATTLE EGRET, WHITE IBIS, SWALLOW-TAILED
KITE, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, PEREGRINE FALCON, SANDHILL CRANE,
BLACK-NECKED STILT, AMERICAN AVOCET, WHIMBREL, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER,
CLIFF SWALLOW, DICKCISSEL, sparrows and PINE SISKIN.
Three BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCKS were seen by a kayaker on June 28
on Miller Creek, just east of Double Bridges Road, Sussex Co, DE not
far from the MD line. Up to five BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCKS were
seen at the Charlestown Retirement Community Pond off Wilkens Ave in
Catonsville, Baltimore Co, MD on July 4 and 5. This is a private
community and access is strictly limited. Please do not attempt to
bird within the retirement community, but rather from behind the
nearby Giant.
An ARCTIC TERN was seen at Violette's Lock, Montgomery Co, MD on June
29. It (or possibly a second bird) was seen again on June 30 and July
1. Another ARCTIC TERN was sighted at the southern end of the Jug Bay
Natural Area, Prince George's Co, MD on July 5.
The Nature Conservancy Piney Grove Preserve, Sussex Co, VA reported
another successful breeding season for RED-COCKADED WOODPECKERS with
the fledging of eighteen birds from seven breeding groups.
A BOBOLINK was noted at Pickering Beach, DE on July 2. A lone BOBWHITE
was heard in a yard in Croom, Prince George's Co, MD on July 3.
1,234 BROWN PELICAN chicks were banded at South Point Marsh, Accomack
Co, VA on June 28-29.
On July 2, an AMERICAN BITTERN was heard thunder-pumping along
Pickering Beach Road, DE. Also on July 2, another AMERICAN BITTERN and
a LEAST BITTERN flew up from the water impoundments at Little Creek
Wildlife Area, DE.
Eight CATTLE EGRETS were observed in a field on Governor's Bridge
Road, east of the Patuxent River, Anne Arundel Co, MD on July 4.
A WHITE IBIS flew over an observer in Bristol, Anne Arundel Co, MD
heading south toward the Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary on July 5.
On July 1 a SWALLOW-TAILED KITE soared in the vicinity of Ingram
Branch Road, west of Harrington, DE. On July 3 and 4, a BROAD-WINGED
HAWK nest with at least 2 fledglings was observed in western Albemarle
Co, VA.
A PEREGRINE FALCON flew out from under the Solomon's Bridge, going
from St. Mary's Co to Calvert Co, MD on June 30.
A SANDHILL CRANE was observed flying south from the Navy Dairy Farm in
Gambrills, Anne Arundel Co, MD on June 30.
Twenty BLACK-NECKED STILTS were sighted along the Chincoteague
causeway, Accomack Co, VA on June 29. Six BLACK-NECKED STILTS and
eight AMERICAN AVOCETS were noted on Poplar Island, Talbot Co, MD on
June 30.
A WHIMBREL was spotted from Rumbly Point Road, Somerset Co, MD on June
28-29.
A total of 28 new and 6 returning RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS were
banded in a yard in Havre de Grace, Harford Co, MD on July 3.
RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were reported carrying food on June 29 in
Powhatan Co, VA. RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were seen on Creamery Road,
Frederic CO, MD and South Keysville Road just north of Sixes Bridge
Road, Carroll Co, MD on July 2. More RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were noted
in Blackwater NWR, Dorchester Co, MD on July 3.
A colony of about 20 CLIFF SWALLOWS were found nesting under the
bridge that goes from Brunswick, Frederick Co, MD into Loudoun Co, VA
on June 29.
The DICKCISSEL, reported last week at the Public Landing Pier,
Worcester Co, MD was seen again, this time accompanied by a second
bird, a female on July 1. Another DICKCISSEL was singing in trees
along Stauffer Road, southeast of Walkersville, Frederick Co, MD on
July 5.
VESPER SPARROWS were seen along Bridgeport and Gregg Roads, Frederick
Co, MD on July 2. Fourteen SALTMARSH and eleven SEASIDE SPARROWS were
observed on Rumbly Point Road, Somerset Co, MD on June 28-29. An
out-of-season WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was reported from Arbutus,
Baltimore Co, MD on June 30. Another WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was seen
in a yard in Hampton, VA on July 1 and 3.
A PINE SISKIN paid a visit to a feeder in California, St. Mary's Co,
MD on July 5.
