Top birds this week are WHITE-CHEEKED PINTAIL* and BELL'S VIREO in VA.
Other birds of interest include BROAD-WINGED HAWK, WHITE IBIS,
shorebirds, GULL-BILLED TERN, OLIVE-SIDED and YELLOW-BELLIED
FLYCATCHERS, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, warblers,
LINCOLN'S SPARROW and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK.
The WHITE-CHEEKED PINTAIL*, first seen on Sept 4 at Snow Goose pool at
the Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA, continues to be seen with
reports on September 16, 17 and 21.
A BELL'S VIREO was captured and banded on the Eastern Shore of
Virginia NWR, Northampton Co, VA on September 19.
Significant kettles of BROAD-WINGED HAWKS were reported during the
week. Numbers in the thousands were reported from the area Hawk
Watches including Cromwell Valley Park, Rockfish Gap and Harvey's
Knob. The highest count of 7891 occurred at Rockfish Gap on September
18. A 45 minute visit to the meadow area of Riverbend Park, Fairfax
Co, VA on September 18, witnessed multiple kettles of BROAD-WINGED
HAWKS totaling 1800-2000.
Twenty eight immature WHITE IBIS were found during a trip to the
Assateague Island National Seashore, Worcester Co, MD on Sept 16.
Reports of AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER came from many locations, including
Ellis Bay WMA, off Muddy Hole Road, Wicomico Co, MD; the Murray Sod
Farm, Worcester Co, MD; the Swan Creek Dredged Material Facility, Anne
Arundel Co, MD; Cherry Lane at the John Brown Sod Farm, Queen Anne's
Co, MD; Violette's Lock, Montgomery Co, MD and Saddle Brook Park,
Bowie, Prince George's Co, MD. Three AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS flew by
the Jackson Landing observation platform at Jug Bay Natural Area,
Prince George's Co, MD on September 18. Another AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER
was noted on the mudflats of Hunting Creek, Dyke Marsh, Fairfax Co, VA
on September 18. There is an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER at Fulton Pond,
Howard Co, MD, seen on September 19. Remember that Fulton Pond is
private property and does not welcome birders. Stay off their driveway
and only view from the side of Rte 216. On September 19, there were
five AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS at the Swan Creek Dredged Material
Facility. On September 19, the number of AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS at
the Murray Sod Farm had increased to an astonishing fourteen
accompanied by 7 or 8 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS.
An UPLAND SANDPIPER was seen on September 15 at the Swan Creek Dredged
Material Facility.
The mudflats on Triadelphia Reservoir, accessed from Triadelphia Lake
Road and encompassing both Montgomery and Howard Counties in MD hosted
a shorebird extravaganza during the week with sightings of SOLITARY,
SPOTTED, SEMIPALMATED, WESTERN, LEAST, WHITE-RUMPED, BAIRD'S, and
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS during the week.
On September 14, a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was noted at Hog Island
WMA, Surrey Co, VA. A single BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER accompanied by a
BAIRD'S SANDPIPER were at the Murray Sod Farm on September 15 while
three BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were at the sod farm on Log Cabin Road,
Wicomico Co, MD on the same day. A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was seen at
the Central Sod Farm off Cherry Lane, Queen Anne's Co MD on September
18.
A WILSON'S PHALAROPE was found September 17 at the Chesapeake Bay
Environmental Center, Queen Anne's Co, MD.
A GULL-BILLED TERN flew over the beach at Bayside, Assateague Island
on September 15.
An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen September 15 at Wheaton Regional
Park, Montgomery Co, MD.
There were numerous YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER reports from a variety
of different locations. On September 15 there was one at Cromwell
Valley Park, Baltimore Co, MD and another at a private home in Jessup,
Anne Arundel Co, MD. A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS and PHILADELPHIA
VIREOS were seen at Wheaton Regional Park, Montgomery Co, MD almost
every day during the week. Schoolhouse Pond, Prince George's Co, MD
hosted a YELLOW-BREASTED FLYCATCHER on September 17 while another
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was at Cylburn on the same day.
PHILADELPHIA VIREOS were also seen at a number of different locations
this past week including four on September 15 at Wheaton Regional Park
another at Cromwell Valley Park and yet another at Bayside, Assateague
Island on the same day. A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen at Rock Creek
Park, Aspen Hill, Montgomery Co, MD and Wheaton Regional Park on
September 17. PHILADELPHIA VIREOS were at Rock Creek Park, DC on
September 17, 18 and 19 and a PHILADELPHIA VIREO was spotted at Lois
Green Conservation Park, Montgomery Co, MD and Leesylvania State Park,
Prince William Co, VA on September 18.
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES showed up at more locations this past week
including five at The Life of the Forest Trail, Assateague Island on
September 15; two came to a feeder in Ellicott City, Howard Co, MD;
one in to a yard in Bethesda, Montgomery Co, MD; two came to a feeder
in Prettyboy, Baltimore Co, MD, all on September 16. RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCHES were seen at Cromwell Valley Park on September 17. A
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH was at Elklick Woodlands in western Fairfax Co,
VA on September 19,
It continues to be a great time for warblers. Among the especially
productive sites were Rock Creek Park, NW DC; Monticello Park,
Alexandria, VA; Riverbend Park, Fairfax Co, VA; Black Walnut Point,
Tilghman Island, Talbot Co, MD; Cylburn Arboretum, Baltimore Co, MD;
Ben Brenman Park, Alexandria, VA; Finzel Swamp, Garrett Co, MD; Upper
Watts Branch Park, Montgomery Co; Wheaton Regional Park, Montgomery
Co, MD; Leesylvania State Park, Prince William Co, VA and Adkins
Arboretum, Caroline Co, MD.
A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was found at Davidsonville Park, Anne Arundel
Co, MD on September 15. Another CONNECTICUT WARBLER was at Patuxent
Ponds Park, Anne Arundel Co, MD on September 18. A CONNECTICUT WARBLER
was seen at the Swan Creek Dredged Material Facility on September 19.
A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co, MD on
September 19 while another was located at the Bacon Ridge Branch, Anne
Arundel Co, MD. Another CONNECTICUT WARBLER was at Governor's Bridge
Prince George's Co, MD on September 20.
On September 14 a MOURNING WARBLER was found at Patuxent Ponds Park,
Anne Arundel Co, MD. Another MOURNING WARBLER was seen on the C&O
Canal about ¼ mile before the Little Falls pumping station, Montgomery
Co, MD on September 17. Another MOURNING WARBLER was at the Julie Metz
Wetlands Mitigation Area, Prince William Co, VA on September 18.
On September 15 there was a LINCOLN'S SPARROW at Rock Creek Park,
Kensington, Montgomery Co, MD. Three LINCOLN'S SPARROWS were seen at
Cromwell Valley Park, Baltimore Co, MD on September 19. A LINCOLN'S
SPARROW was at Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA on September 19
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS were reported in small numbers from a variety
of locations.
