On Friday, September 17, while previewing a New River Valley Bird Club trip
for the following day to Glen Alton in Giles County, I found a
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher in a thicket at the junction of routes 613 and
635. The bird was giving the late season call which sounds very similar to
the Eastern Wood Peewee. It was very yellow on the under parts and had
white wing bars which led me to conclude that it was an adult.
Later, at nearby Glen Alton, found an Olive-sided Flycatcher atop a dead
tree in the lily pond/swamp. I was able to observe it for several minutes
before it made a sortie for an insect and flew out of the area. Efforts to
relocate both birds on Saturday and Monday were unsuccessful
Bill Akers.
