Top birds this week are BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCKS* in MD,
WHITE-FACED STORM-PETREL* in DE, MANX SHEARWATER in MD, FRIGATEBIRD*
in DE, and RED-NECKED STINT* in MD.
Birds of interest this past week include AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN,
ANHINGA*, WHITE IBIS, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, GOLDEN EAGLE, SORA,
shorebirds, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCH, SEDGE WREN,
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, SUMMER TANAGER, LARK SPARROW, and DICKCISSEL.
Two BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCKS* flew down Jug Bay on the Patuxent
River, Anne Arundel Co, MD on Aug 1 and disappeared.
Pelagic trips sailing from Lewes, DE encountered WHITE-FACED
STORM-PETREL* on Aug 3 near the DE/MD border and MANX SHEARWATER on
Aug 5 in MD waters.
A FRIGATEBIRD* species followed the Cape May-Lewes Ferry for several
minutes on July 29.
A RED-NECKED STINT* was seen on Skimmer Island, Ocean City, Worcester
Co, MD on Aug 4; the bird has not been seen since.
Twelve AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were found along the wildlife drive at
Blackwater NWR, Dorchester Co, MD on July 31.
The ANHINGA* visible from the Noland Trail in Mariner's Museum Park
in Newport News, VA was seen again on Aug 1.
Juvenile WHITE IBIS continue to show up around the area. The WHITE
IBIS reported from Merkle WMA last week, was still there on July 31
and Aug 5. Two were seen on Aug 1 in eastern Henrico Co, VA at Crewes
Pond/Channel. Two were reported at a private pond in eastern
Buckingham Co, VA on Aug 2.
A juvenile BROAD-WINGED HAWK was seen at Jug Bay on the Patuxent
River, Prince Georges Co, MD on Aug 3.
A GOLDEN EAGLE flew over the Cambridge airport in Dorchester Co, MD on
Aug 2.
A SORA was found in the model boat basin in the soccerplex in
Germantown, Montgomery Co MD on Aug 6. Another SORA was seen at the
impoundment at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co, MD on Aug 6.
Shorebird migration is nearing a peak. Twenty species were reported
Aug 4 and 5 from Bombay Hook NWR and environs, Kent Co, DE. A somewhat
different set of twenty species was seen at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack
Co, VA on the same dates. Unusually large numbers of BLACK-NECKED
STILT and AMERICAN AVOCET were found on Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore
Co, MD. Frustrated stint seekers were consoled with PIPING PLOVER on
Skimmer Island in Ocean City, MD. UPLAND SANDPIPERS graced a field
along Cordtown Road near the Cambridge, MD airport.
A SEDGE WREN was observed on Elliott Island Rd, Dorchester Co, MD by
the first Fishing Bay sign on July 31.
A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was found at the impoundment near the parking
lot at Hughes Hollow on Aug 5.
A nice suite of birds including SUMMER TANAGER, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER,
and BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCH was seen on a walk at Newport News Park in
VA on Aug 5. A similar collection including RED-HEADED WOODPECKER and
BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCH were along the wildlife drive at Blackwater NWR
on July 31.
A LARK SPARROW was found at Lake Albemarle in western Albemarle Co, VA
on Aug 4.
A DICKCISSEL was seen along Egypt Road, south of Cambridge, Dorchester
Co, MD on July 31, Aug 1, and Aug 4. Three DICKCISSELS were found
along Fooks Rd at the Salisbury, Wicomico Co, MD airport on Aug 1.
