My wife and I went down to Glen Allen this morning to look for the
Crossbill. We arrived about 0915. The bird first arrived at 1045. It flew
in to
the feeder, but only stayed for a count of three. Just before noon I
spotted it in a holly tree over the back fence. I was able to observe it for
better than a minute until it again flew down to the feeder. It fed for a
short time before flying back into the woods. We left shortly thereafter.
Many common species were observed on and around the feeders during our
stay, including a Pine Warbler, Hairy Woodpeckers, Bluebirds, and many
Goldfinches.
An Eastern Chipmunk, recently emerged from hibernation, fed under the
feeder two times.
We certainly appreciate the Dixons providing us with this opportunity to
add this species to our life lists.
