Hi VA-Birders,
We had a great time birding the Maryus loop in SE Gloucester County from
0630-1030AM today and were rewarded with 65 species.
The biggest surprise was a WILLOW FLYCATCHER on Guinea Circle (652) near
the intersection of Maryus Rd (649). Since we've never had that species in
this area, I pulled out my iPod to listen to the song after hearing it, to
confirm what I thought. When I played it, the bird immediately flew in and
perched on a wire above us for a few minutes, giving us time to study it.
When it flew off, it sang several more times, allowing us to confirm its ID
visually and by song.
Jenkins Neck Rd held two other unexpected species - a pair of Red-headed
Woodpeckers and two Northern Bobwhites (calling in different locations).
This area of the county has a lot of pines, cut-over areas and marshes.
Yellow-breasted Chat, Prairie Warbler and Common Yellowthroat were easily
found in the cut-over areas. Willets and Seaside Sparrows were abundant in
the marshes, and Brown-headed Nuthatches were seen and heard in different
stands of pines.
Below is a complete list of species, along with the routes we covered.
Great birding,
Meredith and Lee Bell
