Subject: Willow Flycatchers and Bobolinks at Sky Meadow SP, Fauquier county
tonight
Sky Meadows Rolling Meadows trail (east of route 17, east side of the Lost
Mountain parking lot) was surprisingly active between 5 and 7pm. Yellow
warblers were everywhere, at least a dozen were along the creek on Rolling
Meadows. I had a Bay-breasted Warbler chipping and then fly over my head
from the brush here also. There were 4 Willow Flycatchers within a few 100
feet of each other, all in fine song. The Common Grackles were all hurriedly
bring food to nests. There were dozens of vocal Catbirds. Bobolinks were
heard throughout and seen in the most north-east field, from which I could
see the route 50 & 17 traffic light. The Ravens that had been present here
earlier this spring were not to be found. In prior years they nested further
east on Lost Mountain.
FYI, this winter I saw the Barn Owl in overcast drizzly conditions here.
Since the silo has been sealed up, I had assumed they had left.
