Every year since at least March 2002 Wood Ducks have come into the
small woodlot (about 20 acres) that surrounds our house to check out
cavities in the trees and we hope nest.
Today a drake WOOD DUCK was checking out the different cavities, of
which there are a lot, in the various trees. I didn't see the female
today but in previous years we have watched the male show the female
cavity after cavity without success. While we've never found the
actual nest last year we did observe the male flying back & forth into
the woods on a regular basis through early May. The closest farm pond
is at least a 1,000 yards away.
This year, for the first time, there is an active Red-shouldered Hawk
nest close to where the male was looking this morning.
Today a friend reported a CHIPPING SPARROW at her feeders which are
only a couple of miles from our house even though there was an
AMERICAN TREE SPARROW in my driveway two days ago and FOX SPARROWS and
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS continue to frequent my feeders.
