Based on Bill Hohenstein's report of a peenting American Woodcock near a
residential area off Little River Turnpike, he and I decided this evening to
see if the birds were displaying at Mason District Park off Columbia Pike in
Annandale, Fairfax County. There is a fairly large field in the park that I
speculated might host a woodcock display. By 7:50 PM, just as I announced to
Bill that we were going to get skunked, a woodcock flew right in front of
us. No display, but at least we know the park has woodcocks, or at least 1
woodcock, plus about 5 to 7 Eastern Towhees that vocalized incessantly until
it got dark.
Back at the home front, my Fox Sparrow numbers have dropped from 8 to 4 at
the feeders.
