Yesterday, Sept 2, while birding around the trail that runs through our woods
and along the edge of our field, I was surprised to find a YELLOW-BELLIED
FLYCATCHER feeding in a Black Walnut tree. The greenish-yellow throat, breast
and belly first caught my eye, then the very distinct eye ring, bi-colored bill
and wing bars, which are typical of Empidonax. I watched the bird for a few
minutes. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me, and when I returned
with it a few minutes later the bird had moved on. We have only one other
record for the species in the county. That one was on September 15, 2008 found
by BCBC member Michelle Talbott.
