Each morning over the holidays I refreshed the bird bath with warm water and
have had some surprising visitors. At one time I had blue birds, robins, and
cedar waxwings taking a bath at the same time. Yesterday a yellow-throated
warbler made his appearance. What a treat.

A pair of Baltimore Orioles have been in my yard for one week now, feeding at
the hummingbird feeder and visiting oranges occasionally. I've posted a few

We visited Chincoteague for Thanksgiving week, getting there in the afternoon
on Nov. 20 and departing around 1 on November 26, 2011.
All in all, it was a pretty quiet week. We did drive the service road on
Thanksgiving Day. It is open to the public Thanksgiving Day thru the
following Sunday, 12-3. That was the only time we saw a large number of Snow
Geese--about a thousand. Staff at the visitors center told us the Snow Geese
have been overflying the refuge and heading farther south. We did see large
flocks flying over on Thanksgiving Day and Saturday morning. The weather was
overcast Monday and Tuesday with a major rain storm Tuesday night into Wed.
morning. Swan Cove had numerous shorebirds when we first arrived, but by
Wednesday, all the open areas were covered with water and nearly all the
shorebirds were gone. We did not see near the numbers of birds, and fewer
species, as in past visits this time of the year. From Thanksgiving Day
onward, the weather was quite delightful, and by Friday and Saturday the
number of human visitors had noticeably increased. By far the largest number
of waterfowl was Green-
winged Teal. We were surprised that we did not find any Brant.
Several people commented that the numbers of White Ibis have been increasing
each year for at least the past three years. As noted in other postings,
there were quite a few on the refuge. They were actively moving around in
various size groups and offering great photo opportunities while feeding or
perched in trees along Beach Road.
From our rental house, we watched an immature Eagle intently staring at the
water in Little Oyster Bay. Then it "pounced", and we watched it fly off a
ways with a Flounder.
No one reported seeing the Eurasian Wigeon that was sighted earlier in the
month.
Our list covers the time we were there.
Snow Goose--4 (5 total) at one time in Snow Goose Pool; close to 1,000 at
about the six mile mark on the Service Road on Nov. 24.

I made an abbreviated visit to Occoquan this morning. Highlights were a
house wren at the intersection of Charlie and Delta Roads and a tree swallow
flying over the field near the first exit gate. Other species of note were 2
chipping sparrows (one along the entrance road, another along the wildlife
drive near the marsh), rusty blackbird calling at the marsh, fox sparrow in
several spots, and 6 horned grebes in the river.

Sally Wechsler led a group of eleven on this morning's walk. The river
remains rapid to overflowing because of recent rains and/or perhaps releases
from the reservoir on the VA/West VA border. Thus waterfowl was largely
absent from the river but near the end of the walk a cooperative Horned
Grebe appeared close to the shore. [
We meet each Sunday at 8 AM at the visitors' center and all birders are

Seven birders joined me for a beautiful, if rather slow day at Dyke Marsh,
sponsored by the Friends of Dyke Marsh, and open to all. The last walk in
2011 will be on December 11 and they will resume on January 8 after the
Christmas Bird Count season is over.
Not a lot of diversity today, but persistent scanning of the river yielded a
hen American Wigeon among a flock of shovelers. Two small groups of Tundra
Swans flew southbound while the active, but flightless bird that has been
with us all year was located in its usual spot. A huge convention of Fish
Crows formed over the marina, but they didn't seem to be targeting a raptor.
just flying over the marina in circles vocalizing. We were pleased to see a
small flock of Cedar Waxwings on Ramp Road. A Sharp-shinned Hawk instantly
caused a small group of passerines to suddenly fall silent. We received
wonderful looks at a cooperative Winter Wren east of the Haul Road dogleg.
At the end of the walk, I ran into Gerry Hawkins, who added a few species to
our list.

This morning I visited the Mason Neck Great Marsh area followed by a stop at
Pohick Bay from the boat launch parking lot. Waterfowl are increasing in
diversity and numbers, albeit the Lesser Scaup totals are still an order of
magnitude lower than typical for end of December. Arrival was Greater
Scaup. Also, encountered a couple of Pine Siskins at Hallowing Pt. Totals
for the waterfowl in both locations are listed below.

Hello all
This morning I did a couple of hours of birding in the Stuarts Draft ,
Lyndhurst areas . Also I stopped by the Hawk Watch & stayed from 11 to 12 .
I have 7 Red -tailed hawks & one imm. Bald Eagle go thru the Gap . The Eagle
was over Waynesboro at 11 :40 . Also non hawk were two Ravens , 2 Rusty
Blackbirds & a first for me 2 Horned Lark fly by .The temps stayed at 64 &
cloud cover was about 40% & winds about 3 miles an hr out of the South .
Had to get back home to mow the grass . ( These cooler nights & warm days
makes the grass grow ) On China Clay Rd. at the flooded field there were 2
Green - winged Teal & a Greater Yellowlegs . Over on Hall School Rd. The
Rough - legged Hawk ( light phase ) was flying around on the hunt as well as
an Imm . No. Harrier .

There were 3 birders on today's monthly birdwalk at Prince william County's
Merrimac Farm.? We tallied 26 species on a very pleasant walk through this
delightful property.? Our highlights included 3 Hooded Mergansers on Cedar
Creek, a Hermit Thrush scolding us from a grove of Red Cedars, and a single
Cedar Waxwing near the Stone House.? These walks are sponsored by the Prince
william Conservation Alliance and take place on the last Sunday of each
month.? Merrimac is a largely unknown site in Northern Virginia that attracts
more birds than birders.? It's out of the way, but well worth the drive.?

A mini kettle of four Buteos at about 1:40 goaded me into staying an extra
half hour instead of quitting at two as I had intended at one, and for that
extra half hour I was rewarded with nothing. The more important part of the
story is of course the species of two of the Buteos in the kettle: a pair
of late Broad-winged Hawks. Not that the species on this date is completely
unheard of this site, but a bit of a reminder that November might be coming
a few weeks later than usual this year.

This afternoon around 3:40 the Loggerhead Shrike was located at the third
turnaround on the LEFT side as you drive into Ashville Park. He was perched
in a tree on the rise of the hill and flew down into the field to perch on
a tall weedy plant. Tom and I were happy to meet up with Beth & Keith who
also saw the bird :-)
I have posted some pictures (although not as good as the ones I got last
November) along with some pictures of an Osprey we saw earlier at Mackey
Island NWR. We bumped into Peggy Waterfield and she told us the Osprey
winters over there. Look in the album for the pic. with the buggy eyes...it
is so funny looking!

Hi All,
The Shrike was still present in Va. Beach in the same area reported
previously this year and last.? He/she does have four bands. The bird pretty
much stays in the same location and time of day to see it doesn't seem to
matter.? We were there today around 11AM, but have seen the bird at different
times.
There was also White Throat Sparrows, Song Sparrows, Two Red-tailed Hawks,
Mockingbirds, Great Blue Heron and Blue Birds? were seen as well.

Hello birders,
Myself and Allen Bryan looked for the Macgillivray's Warbler this past
Thursday morning, but did not relocate it. However it was a nice
morning to be out with 3 or 4 Fox Sparrows in song, and 4
Orange-crowned Warbler seen. This is a high count for the Hopewell CBC
area for Orange-crowned Warbler . Previous high counts were from 1955
and 2008 with 3 individuals.
Many 1000s of gulls persist in the area. Mostly Laughing Gull. 2 1st
year Lesser Black-backs were also seen. Also 1 shorebird sp., very
distant, probably a Dunlin.

There was a nice mix of waterfowl at the mouth of Powell's Creek this
morning, as viewed from the boardwalk area.? Birds noted in the water and
flying overhead included about 50 ruddy ducks, 24 ring-necked ducks, 20
lesser scaup, 20 mallard, 18 northern shovellers, 18 black ducks, 6 redheads,
2 bufflehead, and 1 canvasback.? A single pied-billed grebe was also
present.? 10 tundra swans were on the west side of the train trestle. Other
birds noted in the park included 6 woodpecker species (missing red-headed),
both kinglets, creeper, hermit thrush, and American pipits.

I birded the Hopewell area this a.m. and at dawn at the Hopewell Marina I
momentarily spotted a 1st winter Franklin's Gull in the dawns early light. I
captured an image of the bird but it is grainy and slightly out of focus due
to high ISO and low light. It is the 3rd image down on the following link:

The gull did not linger for long and flew further up the Appomattox River
drainage.
As Arun Bose mentioned in an earlier post the gull flock continues to grow
and is easily in the 10-15K+ range.
Also observed 3 Orange-crowned Warblers in the City today.

There is a hawk watch conducted right there at Mt Afton near
Charlottesville, VA.? About 15 or so species migrate down that corridor
from August to November.

I birded the main marsh at Huntley Meadows today, locating 3 drake and 1 hen
Northern Shovelers, several Green-winged Teal, and a Northern Pintail.
Then following the route Larry Meade took yesterday along Barnyard Run, I
discovered a late female Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, a half dozen or so Eastern
Bluebirds, and a flock of up to 40 Rusty Blackbirds.?

The season's third Clay-colored Sparrow was seen from the platform this
morning. A Western Palm Warbler also provided a bit of a break in the
monontony that has characterized way too much of November, but other than
those two passerines, a pretty slow day. Six Monarchs were seen.

Nine of us showed up for the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy's regular bird walk
(every 4th Sat except Dec) at the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental
Stewardship in northwestern Loudoun County near Harper's Ferry.? It was in
the lower 30's when we started and stayed surprisingly cool for awhile though
it did finally warm up to almost 60.
One of our first birds occurred at the very beginning of the walk and alerted
us to its presence with a thrush-like call that was similar to but not the
chup of a Hermit Thrush but closer to the quip of a SWAINSON'S THRUSH.? It
was perched in a tree near the small farm pond which is close to the
Education Center and stayed there long enough to for all of us to get great
looks at it and for one person to take a photo which I haven't rec'd yet.?
All its diagnostics (distinct buffy eye ring, dull spotting on the chest &
dull coloration on the back, & a total lack of tail-dipping the entire time
we watched it) indicated a very late Swainson's Thrush.? To top it off, when
it finally flew away we listened to dif. thrushes on BirdJam and when it flew
back in, it responded to the call of a Swainson's Thrush.? The late date for
Swainson's Thrush in the Maryland Yellow Book is Dec. 1; looking at
Virginia's Gold Book this may be a late record for VA.? Hope the
photos turns out.? Interes
tingly enough we never found a Hermit Thrush in spite of being in pretty nice
habitat for this species.
After watching the Swainson's Thrush we crossed the berm next to the pond
where there was lots of activity including our heard our first Brown Creeper
of the walk(we saw three and heard at least that many in other locations),?
one of several we heard and three.? We also had several Golden-crowned
Kinglets and at least two Ruby-crowned Kinglets.? Other highlights included
two Fox Sparrows, at least 6 Field Sparrows (but no Am. Tree Sparrows), more
Juncos than we wanted to count, and a handful of hawks.? Also surprising was
the lack of any Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers.? All in all a nice walk on a
pleasant late fall day.

Terry Jenkins emailed me the following and asked me to post on the bird line:
At 9:30 am Saturday morning Bob Loomis and I were waiting for Aaron Decker at
Eastern Virginia Medical School in downtown Norfolk, so we could all ride
together to the ODU football game. All of a sudden four Crows chased a small
owl out of one of the tall pine trees in front of Hofheimer Hall. The owl
trying to evade the crows flew into the mesh fencing that surrounds the lower
level of one on the parking garages and fell to the sidewalk. The crows
started landing around him and he was not moving so I decided to intervene. I
drove over, got out and chased the crows away. Of course we could have let
nature take its course but since the owl had flown into the mesh grating I
made the decision to save him. Also I say that the owl was a he but really
have no idea. The owl which I now recognized as a Saw Whet did not fly away
but he was sitting up right. So I dropped a small towel over him and picked
him up , we checked him over and he seemed to be ok, he was
just stunned. We drape
d the towel over him again and drove him over to Norfolk Audubon's Wyanoke
Preserve where after a couple of pictures we placed him in a tree and he
immediately flew off. Hopefully no worse for wear. Great way to start the day.

An Orange-crowned Warbler (the same one that returns each year?) arrived
yesterday to my backyard!? It is a happy sign of winter for me.

This afternoon around 1pm a group of us saw the shrike in a bare deciduous
tree on the northwest corner of the third traffic circle in the development
where it was earlier reported.

whet owl in Norfolk!? How inspiring!!!
On that note, we would love everyone to be aware of the Virginia Beach SPCA's
24 hour Wildlife Referral Line.? The number is (757) 263-4762.? We are based
in Virginia Beach, but serve the Hampton Roads area.? All volunteers with the
SPCA Wildlife Program are happy to help with any questions or concerns about
injured/orphaned birds and other wildlife.? If?a wild?bird or animal is
injured, you may bring it to the SPCA on Holland Rd in Virginia Beach, or
call the referral line for help.? We also have volunteers ready to go out to
assist the animal, or bring it in if needed. The SPCA has veterinarians on
staff and many affiliated wildlife rehabilitators ready to help!? Our main
goal is to assist and prepare all injured or orphaned wildlife so they may
live as nature intended, in the wild.?
