Fellow birders,
Twenty-eight persons, including several enthusiastic young boy scouts,
joined me this
morning on the regular Sunday walk at Dyke Marsh Nature Preserve sponsored
by
the Friends of Dyke Marsh. Highlights included six Great Egrets at the
edge of
Hunting Creek from the picnic area; a flock of House Finch foraging on the
ground in the picnic area; four Bald Eagles foraging on mud flats and one
on a
nest on a power line structure from the picnic area; numerous Osprey,
including
recently-fledged young feeding on the nest near the marina boat launch;
many
Purple Martins in flight and perched low on trees above us along Haul
Road; two
Orchard Orioles; a couple of Warbling Vireos, including to the delight of
Dyke
Marsh Breeding Bird Survey Coordinator Larry Cartwright a female on a nest
spotted by Phil Silas just before the dog leg in Haul Road; Eastern
Kingbirds
in the picnic area and at the end of Haul Road; a pair of Blue-gray
Gnatcatchers along Haul Road; a pair of Belted Kingfishers from the first
platform deck at the end of Haul Road; a couple of Marsh Wrens singing
from the
island across from the second platform deck at the end of Haul Road; and,
for a
few lucky participants, a briefly seen and heard Least Bittern from the
first
platform deck at the end of Haul Road. We missed Northern Parula, Yellow
Warbler and Baltimore Oriole during this quiet breeding period but
thoroughly
enjoyed what we saw on this beautiful, relatively cool sunny morning. For
