Mark Johnson, Peggy Lyons & I birded in Campbell & Appomattox Counties today
around Concord (south to marshy area on Route 757, north to Stonewall area, and
southeast to Gala Lake).
Highlights:
· an adult Bald Eagle was the first I've seen in Campbell County (seen
in an area that was clear-cut a year or two ago on Route 757)
· two Red-headed Woodpeckers in same clear-cut area - first time seen
there since area was clear cut
· a very early White-throated Sparrow (Gold Book expected date is 30
Sep with extreme early date of today, 31 Aug) - we clearly heard this bird
singing but could not visually locate it
· only three warblers: 2 Pine Warblers, 2 Common Yellowthroat, and 1
Hooded Warbler
The complete species list follows (Note: a=seen in Appomattox County & c=seen
in Campbell County).
