I had an opportunity to ride a boat out of the Gloucester Point area of
Achilles and the Osprey and Bald Eagle populations are very healthy along
with Cormorants and other shorebirds. Fishing is not a hobby of mine, but
when I was asked to go I accepted the invitation and took it as an
opportunity to enjoy birding from a different vantage point. As the boat
pulled out Crown Point Marina through the "no wake" zone each channel marker
had an Osprey on it with a nest and we were able to pass within 10 to 15
feet of the nest. It was amazing to be so close to a wild Osprey like that
and be able to see their distinct markings. I did notice that none of them
had their young with them so I must assume that by now they have left the
nests. Anyway, if you ever get a chance to bird from a boat I urge that you
do so. However, I do prefer a more eco-friendly approach such as kayaking.
