Hello birders,I'm looking for advice please on a field guide to birds in North
America.
I'd appreciate your thoughts, but please reply off-line. I doubt the whole
group wants to add this discussion to the main list.
I lost one of our copies of Sibley, so we're down to one hard-copy print of the
2nd (current) edition, and it's time to pick up a good second guide. Right now
the front-runner is an app, the Sibley eGuide - just an electronic version of
our print book.
The specific features I'm looking for are1) good illustrations (not photos)2)
alternate plumages (Sibley is pretty good about that)3) readable range maps
(some guides are not very good for that)4) a "Similar species" discussion or
option for each bird (Sibley has some of that information, but only for
selected birds, not for every one)
5) a good selection of calls (nice to have but only available with apps, and
some apps have more variety of calls than others)6) current taxonomy - does
anyone know when any field guide is expected to be released, print or
electronic, reflecting the massive AOU list changes from this August?
Thanks!!
