With help from a couple birders, esp. Wendy Ealding's forwarded
articles, the moorhen question is resolved. They do dive, not often
I gather, but given that, the one I saw fits perfectly Sibley's
picture of Adult Breeding Moorhen. I did notice right away that his
head is carried a little more forward than a coot's (with whom I'm
very familiar).
Sad to say I did not find him today, tho if he likes to hide in the
edge grasses he could easily be missed. It was pure luck that I saw
him out in the water. If anyone would like to come and look, please
email me. I'm in south VA Beach.
