Despite high humidity, threats of rain, and gloomy cloudiness, 23 birders took
part in today's Huntley Meadows Monday Morning Birdwalk. We tallied 45
species. With the central pond nearly dry, mudflats attracted migrating
shorebirds. Killdeer and Semipalmated Sandpipers topped the list, with fewer
numbers of Least, Solitary, and Lesser Yellowlegs rounding out the count. Also
of interest was the complete absence of Canada Geese. I can't remember the
last time we had no Geese. Other highlights included a couple of Blue
Grossbeaks, five species each of Woodpeckers and Flycatchers, and a feisty
Hummingbird chasing a Green Heron around.
