I visited the Bentivar marsh, Albemarle County, this morning.
Vocalizing there was a rail that I was unable to see. The rail
repeatedly and only made the kidik-kidik-kidik vocalization, never
the oink-oink one that I closely associate with a Virginia Rail. I
don't think this was the vocalization of a King Rail, but I am not
experienced with that species. Virginia Rails are quite uncommon in
this county. Not surprisingly, this is the first March record. Also
at the marsh was a Common Yellowthroat, my first of the season, and
about five Rusty Blackbirds. Stauffer Miller
