Highlights for the midmorning walk were 2 pair of Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, 4
Pine Warblers, several Golden-crowned Kinglets, 2 Wood Thrashers, a couple of
Eastern Phoebes & a nesting pair of Eastern Bluebirds. An alarm call by a
single Pileated Woodpecker flushed a Red-tailed Hawk that was immediately
harassed by several Common Ravens (whom occupy their same nest under the train
trestle). By pond #1 were Wood Ducks, a Great Blue Heron & at least 9
Yellow-rumped Warblers. All the usual suspects were in play within the yard
but, White-throat & White-crowned Sparrows, as well as Song & Chirping
Sparrows plus Eastern Towhees seemed to be in every picture. No Fox Sparrows
today. Plenty of Nuthatches & Titmice and Downey & Red-bellied Woodpeckers.
One lone Carolina Wren was scurry’n about pulling dog hair from the welcome
mat. (I think they learned that trick from watching the Chickadees pick at
it.) Northern Cardinals made up the largest “gang” of sometimes 30+ birds.
