Finally, a decent morning at Leesylvania. At first I was frustrated by poor
light and birds flitting rapidly through the treetops in the picnic area. I
finally ran into a group of birds on the hillside next to the ruins that let
themselves be id'd. They included 4 Tennessee warblers, black-throated blue,
black-and-white, redstart, common yellowthroat, rose-breasted grosbeak and wood
thrush. At the bottom of the hill, along the road was another group that
contained more of the same plus magnolia. The biggest flock of over 50 birds
flew across the road leading to the boat storage area I was able to identify
only a fraction as there were too many, but the group included a very
cooperative yellow-bellied flycatcher which was pumping its tail and calling, 2
scarlet tanagers, another rose-breasted grosbeak, a yellow-throated vireo, a
yellow-billed cuckoo, and redstart, northern parula, black-and-white,
black-throated blue, and yellow-throated warblers. I added chestnut-sided
warbler at Bushey Point. A flyover red-headed woodpecker at the Visitor's
Center was a nice bonus. The ebird checklist for this visit is here:
