No Cearbhall, I have not done out a table. I just typed names down under
each other, and did as I outlined in my previous mail.

Maureen,

Now I see it! Am I right in thinking that you have set up a table with each
book and its details set out in columns? I can see that you could sort that
fine with the Tables options.

That explains the list and sorting it. Returning to the original issue,
what did you want to collate?

All the best,

Cearbhall

Cearbhall, I didn't have to download a tool but yes, you can do it in
"Word". I am using Word 2003 and I append the steps hereunder. I have
tried it and it does work.

1. Select the list of names
2. Click "Table", then "sort"
3. Select sort by paragraph, ascending
4. Click "ok"

There you have it.

Maureen,

Is this a Word bibliography or just a list of books that you have put
together line by line?

I always prefer to use Excel for sorting lists. However, I am intrigued to
know that you can do it in Word. Can you describe the tool that you have
heard about? Can you try it and let us know how it goes?

I would be happy to describe how to do the sort in Excel 2003 if that suits
you?

Hi Cearbhall; yes I am trying to sort books alphabetically either by name or
by Author. I am using Windows Xp pro with Word 2003. On looking on the web
it appears one can download a free tool for this purpose - have you ever
tried this?; Maureen.

Maureen,
My mistake! I forgot to ask what system and Word version you are using.
Could you explain what you are attempting to do? It sounds like you are
looking for a means of sorting something into alphabetical order. Is that
so? See the description of collating as given in the article below.

Here is the link to the use of the earlier versions:
http://wordribbon.tips.net/T008057_Collating_Copies.html
I note that you are using XP but Which version of Word are you using?
Here's an extract from the older web page:

Please Note: This article is written for users of the following Microsoft
Word versions: 97, 2000, 2002, and 2003. If you are using a later version
(Word 2007 or later), this tip may not work for you. For a version of this
tip written specifically for later versions of Word, click here: Collating
Copies.
If you work where there is a good size copy machine, you already know what
it means to collate something. With a copier, it means the multi-page
document you are copying is placed in complete sets that can be used right
away. It is the same in Word. If you have a document that consists of five
pages, and you are printing multiple copies, you can either print them
collated or normal. When they are collated, they are in page 1-5 order for
each of the five sets. If they are not collated, five copies of the first
page are printed, then five of the second, and so on. To control collating,
follow these steps:
1. Choose Print from the File menu. Word displays the Print dialog box.
2. Specify the number of copies you wish to print.
3. Click on the Collate Copies check box. If the check box is selected, this
indicates the copies will be collated.
4. Click on OK. Your document will be printed.

If you need help with sorting I would be happy to advise.

All the best,

Cearbhall

Thanks Cearbhall I will have a try but it may not work for me because I am
still using Windows XP. I didnt think it was at the printing stage that one
collated I had thought there was some feature like "Ascend" and "Descend" as
in Outlook Express for changing text into alphabetical order and whereby one
could check things before printing.

Maureen,

Here is a nice clean description that I hope does what you need:
http://wordribbon.tips.net/T008057_Collating_Copies.html--------------------
------------------------------------------------
The essential instructions on the web page are:
Collating Copies
by Allen Wyatt (last updated April 2, 2013) Please Note: This article is
written for users of the following Microsoft Word versions: 2007, 2010, and
2013.
To control collating, follow these steps if you are using Word 2007:
1. Press Ctrl+P. Word displays the Print dialog box.
2. Specify the number of copies you wish to print.
3. Click on the Collate check box. If the check box is selected, this
indicates the copies will be collated.
4. Click on OK. Your document is printed.

If you are using Word 2010 or Word 2013 the steps are a bit different
because Microsoft got rid of the Print dialog box. Follow these steps,
instead:
1. Press Ctrl+P. Word displays the print options on the File tab of the
ribbon.
2. Using the Copies control, specify the number of copies you wish to print.
3. Examine the controls in the Settings area. You'll find one that controls
collation.
4. Change the collation setting as desired. (You can select either Collated
or Uncollated.) 5. Click on the Print button. Your document is printed.

All the best,

Cearbhall
