Not Tony, but when you ring 196 you are on to Directory Enquiries. This is a general service, and you would be charged if you make a request for assistance there. Instead, you ask the operator for Special Enquiry Services. When you are put through, and you supply the requested information, they look up a database to see if you are registered etc. O2 and Vodafone are in the list of providers who are accepting the free-to-end-user status of the said Special Enquiry Services.

Flor,

The good news is indeed spreading re FDE on our mobiles now!

Yes I get through on other mobile phones no prob!

I rang o2 this evening again as it is normally a quitish time for them and they have taken my query squarely on board and will pass it to their technical people first thing but it may take a few days to get back to me.

The strange thing too is that it is not working on my wife's mobile either and she isn't even registered for the service; so It's not just me!

And no, we haven't been barred by them! (Smile)!

And no it's not the sims!
Cheers,

Tony

 Hi Tony,

I'm using O2. To my surprise, I dialled 196 and got through to
 Directory Inquiries right away.

In answer to a question from eleanor: this service is free as it has
been for land-lines for several years, and now it's free for
vision-impaired mobile phone users from most providers here also, once
you register. You do this by filling out a form you can get from NCBI,
 etc.
