so you do not have to press the function key. what is the make and model of
your laptop? you'll need sighted help to change the setting, but its well
worth doing and will restore normal functionality to the top row of keys.

The caps lock does actually work as the insert key. I have discovered that I
need to press function and f12 to get the time which is a bit of a nuisance
but i'm sure i'll get used to it after a while.

In most screen readers you can set caps lock as an insert key. This means
that when you press and hold caps lock, it'll act as insert, and when you
press it twice in quick succession, it'll turn caps lock on and off. Please
