Using The Office 2007 Ribbon

"The Ribbon is a blue banner that stretches across the top of the screen."

"Commands are organized on the Ribbon within groups on several different
tabs."

The Ribbon has three parts:

*. tabs,

*. groups,

*. commands.

The tabs identify core tasks such as Insert and Page Layout, and can be
navigated by using the left and right arrow keys.

The groups show related items for each of the tasks such as Font and
Paragraph formats.

The commands are pulled together for each group and can be executed by
clicking buttons, entering information in dialog boxes, or selecting options
from menus.

Using the Mouse to Navigate the Ribbon

Even though most of the menus and toolbars have been eliminated, you can
still use the mouse to move around and view your options. Simply click one
of the tabs. Each tab displays related groups.

Some of the groups include the More button, when you see this option, you
can click it to pull up more choices from that group of commands.

Notes:Zoomtext, Lunar or Supernova users may find the item known as the
dialogue launcher somewhat useful:

The Dialog Box Launcher is in the lower-right corner of many of the groups.

To open the dialog box:

1. Point to the Dialog Box Launcher in the Font group. A ScreenTip displays
an image and describes the button.

2. Click the Dialog Box Launcher to open the Font dialog box.

3. Close the dialog box.

When you point to a command or option on the Ribbon, the key combinations
are displayed in a ScreenTip. Using key combinations can save you a lot of
time.

(The Ribbon and the keyboard)

If you are a screen reader user then using keyboard shortcuts will be a all
important learning task. I am a jaws user and after having spent quite a
bit of time using word 2007, I do like its keyboard functionality.

Each tab and each group option on the Ribbon has a keyboard shortcut. These
shortcuts are called Access keys. In order to use these keyboard shortcuts,
you must first switch from Text Entry mode (the default mode) to Command
mode, which acti-vates the Access keys. You use the Alt key to toggle
between Text Entry mode and Command mode.

Upon switching to Command mode, the key tips (the required key strokes) are
visible in badges on all the tabs for anyone who has some sight and can make
these symbols out. Each tab has a badge with a key tip. You use these key
tips to access the various tabs and the options within the groups. Sometimes
the keystrokes will execute a command. Other times, the keystroke will
display a dialog box or open a menu.

NOTE In previous versions of Word, there were underscored letters on many of
the menu items. The underscored letters have been replaced with these key
tips.

To practice using keystrokes to access commands:

1. Press Alt to switch to Command mode.

2. Press O to display the Format tab.

3. Press T to display the "Tabs"command.

4. Press "Escape" to Close the dialog box.

Word automatically returns to Text Entry mode.

TIP You can also use the Tab key to move from one option to another within a
group. After selecting the last option in a group, pressing the Tab key
again will select the first option on the next group.

(Exercise)

Navigating the ribbon.

1. While in a word document, press the "command key, I.E the alt key"

2. Press the right arrow to move across the ribbon.

3. When you come to the insert tab, press the "tab key" to jump
inside of that group in order to find out whats in there.

4. Use the tab key to explore all of the items contained within the
Insert Tab.

5. When finished, press "escape key" a couple of times to return to
the edit screen.

Do this as many times as you like going through all of the various tabs so
that you can learn whats contained within each one of them.
