[Cutting and Pasting Text]

Introduction:
By now, you should know how to select text in a document. Once you have
selected text, you can move it to another place in the document by cutting
and then
pasting it elsewhere. Cutting and pasting text is one of the most common
tasks you're likely to do when you use Word. When you cut text, it is
removed
from its original location and placed in a temporary storage area called the
Clipboard . You can then move the insertion point to a new location in a
document
and paste the cut text from the Clipboard.

The clipboard is available in any Windows program, so you can cut and paste
text between various software programs.

Step 1. Start by Selecting Window menu, "Alt + W", then the Abraham
Lincoln file from the menu .
Or you can just use keys, "alt + tab" to switched between files.

*. Magnification users, Another way to switch between open windows is to
click the window's document icon on the Windows taskbar .

The Abraham Lincoln file document appears.

Select the following line from the file on page 1 or I have made it a
little easier for you and have inserted the line below for you to use
either;
Note: Go back to an earlier lesson which tells you how to select text
before continuing.

"The Project Gutenberg EBook of Abraham Lincoln: A History V1 "

Step 2. Magnification users, Click the Cut button on the Standard toolbar .

Screen reader users, Another way to cut is to press;
*. Ctrl + X ,
*. select Edit → Cut from the menu, or click the right-mouse button and
select Cut from the shortcut menu .

The selected text is cut, or removed, from the document and placed on the
Windows Clipboard .
The Windows Clipboard holds any cut or copied text. Once you have cut some
text from a document, you can paste it elsewhere.

Step 3. Move the insertion point to the blank line just before the
paragraph below; That is the PC cursor, and not the mouse pointer.

(Begin text)
A generation born since Abraham Lincoln died has already reached manhood and
womanhood. Yet there are
millions still living who sympathized with him in his noble aspirations, who
labored with him in his toilsome
life, and whose hearts were saddened by his tragic death.
(End Text)

*. You want to paste the line of text you copied earlier in the lesson on
the blank line just before that paragraph.
Note in order for cut and paste features to work in this lesson you should
copy this entire lesson into a blank word document and then carry out the
exercises.

Step 3. Magnification users, Click the Paste button on the Standard toolbar
.

*. Screen reader users, Another way to paste is to;
*. press Ctrl + V
*. select Edit → Paste from the menu
*. Just on the blank line, press the application key to open the context
menu and arrow down to paste and press the enter key.

The cut text is inserted.
Now let's add some blank lines after the inserted text.

Step 4. Press Enter twice to add two blank lines beneath the inserted text .

*. You can also cut and paste text between two documents. So instead of
retyping the President's schedule, you can simply cut and paste it.

Step 1. Open up Microsoft word into a blank document and then type a few
lines of text into that document.

Step 2. Press keys "control + N" to open up a new blank document.
Step 3. Now press; "control + F6" to go back into the first document where
you typed in some lines of text and then press keys "control + A" to select
all text in that document.
Step 4. Now press keys, "control + letter C" to copy the text.
Step 5. Now once again press keys "control + F6" to go back into the new
blank document.
Step 7. Press keys "control + V" to paste the contents of the office
clipboard into the blank document.

Now you have two documents exactly the same.

Note: You can do this with lines or paragraphs of text, whatever you like,
just follow instructions above.

Now that you know how to cut and paste text, you should be able to breeze
through the next lesson: copying and pasting text.
