Interesting dfifference!
I am using NVDA but this is not an accurate comparison since I simply selected
a large portion of the original message and used NVDA's screen capture to mark
the top and bottom of it. I very likely left out lines and other text that was
on the lower part of the screen.
The whole word count report is spoken when it first appears but then can be
studied only in NVDA's Object Review.
Perhaps we should take an actual document and compare results then!

You don't say which screen-reader you used. The information as presented and
pasted is not totally accurate.
Now, using JAWS16, here is the Word Count Statistics dialogue from the message
body (excluding headers) of Mairead's original email:
Word Count
Statistics:
Pages 1
Words 78
Characters (no spaces) 301
Characters (with spaces) 381
Paragraphs 1
Lines 10
Include textboxes, footnotes and endnotes Close
(That last line is a checkbox which is read by JAWS in that box, by
default.)
There was only one page. If there'd been more, that number would have been
included.

If you press alt>r>w in sequence you will get the word count. It is located on
the review tab of the main menu.
I just carried out that command in Word 2010 having pasted the content of your
message into Word and here is the result

Hi all,
I am righting a document which can only have 500 words in it. I am using
office 2010 with Jaws and I am unable to find out how many words are in the
document.
I found word count in the review tab but when I went in to it I just got
options such as footnote and close but nothing that gave me a word count.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
