HI Joe and Jackie,
There are a few scenarios where this could be possible.
Firstly Joe, when you play music with Alexa, I’m assuming you are asking her
something like ‘Alexa, play the carpenters’ and then naming the song you want
to hear.
I’m thinking if that is the case, and in particular if it also started playing
through your granddaughter’s phone, that you are using Spotify or Amazon Prime
Music, either as a subscription or as a free trial.
The only other way to play music through Alexa is to Bluetooth your phone to
it, and then you’d have to do the music controlling bit from the phone, in
other words, you can’t give Alexa commands to play music from a library that
she doesn’t know of, such as Apple Music.

I'm still confused how are you playing music on your echo. When I ask Alexa to
play my kind of music: i ask her for: Alexa play, streets of new york by the
wolftones on spotify. she will repeat what i said and play this class song. Now
my iPhone is sitting silent and i can still receive texts and calls during the
playing of this song. I can control the spotify threw my echo: IE i can click
on a song and it will play on my dot but even with this my phone is still
operating as a phone. I did enjoy playing elmo and the muppets last night and
freaked my sister out.
