If you don’t know the difference between a CPU register and a hardware
register, then you are in no position to attempt to debug a driver like this.
Look, it’s time for total honesty here. What’s your real goal? If you are
just doing this for fun, then you need to give up. You’re dealing with an
antique, complicated driver written for antique hardware that you’re trying to
run on a modern simulation of the hardware on an antique operating system.
Without a deep understanding of the driver model, the hardware spec, and the VM
environment, it is hopeless.
If you just want audio in your VM, then you already know the Realtek driver
works.
If you’re doing this for a product to sell for a company, then you need to hire
someone to do this work, assuming you can find someone who is interested. Even
that will be difficult, since AC97 long ago ceased to be relevant.
