For a serial port, I've seen it search for 30 or 40 seconds before it
gives up.  For a 1394 connection, it's usually quicker than that.

You need the changes to boot.ini (or bcdedit for Vista) on the target
computer, you need windbg running on the host computer, and you need the
cables connected properly.  Are you trying to use a serial port?
