I was surprised, the plug-in is almost 12 years old and it has about
1000 downloads.
Yes, beat-matching would be cool. In this case, the (negative) gap
parameter would indicate the maximum allowed overlapping.
I'm not quite sure how I can improve on this. The alignment part
should be fairly easy with the new aud-do commands.
However, I want the cross fades to be none-destructive if possible.
This could be done by creating a special track that holds only the
cross fade portions (inverted) and is mixed in on playback or export.

By the way, you could first select all tracks and align them end to end.
This arranges all tracks from top to bottom in sequence, thus you hear all
tracks alone.
However, you would still have to do the overlapping yourself.
That is, moving the second track back two seconds, the third four seconds
etc.
Some 5 years back, I wrote a plug-in that does all the alignment and
crossfading pretty much alone.
It's on the forum and called "Chain It up".
I should it update at some point since we have now more macro
possibilities.

That certainly explains why the alignment did not work. Pressing j
takes you to the beginning of the track and shift-j does that and also
selects all audio between where you had so precisely placed the cursor
and the beginning. In either case, that would mess up your alignment.
With practise these commands become second nature, but it takes a
while to be familiar with all the concepts involved.

Yes, the selection is what we need to be careful.
This is what messes up the overlapping.
Also, earlier I was pressing |J| at the second song when I selected it.
But seems that should have been the reason both songs were playing
together from the beginning.
When I followed your instructions that did not happen. Thank you for
your guidance.
As you said, I am trying to practice doing it more and more before I
start my planned project.
In case if you get any idea of using the batch processing of this task
please keep me posted.

Well done. Audacity has a batch facility, which I have not explored at
all.
It may or may not let you align a bunch of tracks without the tedium.
At this stage though, the practise will be helpful.
No, definitely do not reimport the songs because, if I understand
correctly, you will undo your good work. By all means though, save
the project from time to time in case something goes horribly wrong.
You can either:
* Import two songs and align them.
* Import a third song and align it with the second.
* And so on
Or:
* Import all songs.
* Align the second with the first.
* Align the third with the second.
* And so on.
Once you have more than two tracks, be careful as to which one (and
only
one) you have selected.

Hi Ravi
Let’s start with just two songs so as not to complicate the issue.
Open Audacity and, from the File Menu, import two songs in turn. That
should have each song on a separate track. If you play you will hear
them both at once. Make sure that the second track is not selected
(pressing Enter on a track selects and deselects it). Arrow up to the
first track and make sure it is selected.
* Press k to go to the end of the track.
* Press comma (,) – say – three times to move back three seconds. The
amount you go back may depend on how the song ends and how much
overlap you want. Pressing spacebar will let you hear the end of the
song.
* Press Enter to deselect the track.
* Arrow down to the second track and press Enter to select it.
* Press alt-t followed by a and then followed by c and that should do the
trick.
Let us know what happens when you do that.

Are your tracks playing together only before you do the align tracks
process? If so, that is what should happen. If they are playing
together after you align all of them, something has gone amiss when
attempting to align them.

Thank you very much for all your suggestions and step by step
instructions.
I am trying to fiddle with them and getting used to them.
In fact earlier, before I did this crossfading and other actions, I
remember that whatever number of tracks are imported, only the
selected track was playing.
But now all are playing together. So why I’m bit confused.
I’m afraid whether I have not noticed this correctly earlier.
Yes, as suggested the solo function works fine.
As Jim mentioned, muting is also very useful.
Let me play with this and revert back.

which tracks are played does not depend on either which track is the
focus or which tracks are selected.
To listen to a single track, you can solo it. The shortcut to solo the
focused track is Shift + S. To unsolo it, you can press Shift + S.

I am Ravindran from Sri Lanka. And just joined this list.
I am Blind and using Windows 10 with NVDA & Audacity latest versions.
Appreciate if someone could guide me how to overlap songs(MP3) in
Audacity.
Actually, I want as below:
Assume, there are two songs. Either as separate tracks or merged in a
single track.
When the first song finishes, before it stops playing, I want the
second song to start while the first reaching its end.
We should be able to set a time period.
And should be able to get this done for a long list of songs merged in
a single music track.
Because when we merge several songs to a single track, there are
silences in between every song. But removing the silence, makes the
songs play just one after other.
But I want the songs to overlap towards the end of each song. If
required can have them as separate tracks.
Like to create a non-stop music file.
Hope my question is clear. Any suggestion would be a great help.
