[audacity4blind] Monitoring my input before recording

Hello all,
A very stupid question I guess, but I am totally new to audacity and I will try
to ask not too much as a beginner, but this is for me quite essential.
When I start audacity and I choose a track I should like to hear my keyboard
before recording.
Is hardware output through the only way to do this.
With softrhough option you get latency which I don't want to have.
