Hey Guys, I got it! David, Ted and Andrew, thanks so much. This morning all
the info you fed me melded together in my brain and went, Ding! The USB
interface went to default when plugged in and through sound settings I put it
back to speakers and switched the Jaws sound card to the USB device and Bam! I
love this list. Now my recording quality sounds good but I feel the volume is
a bit low. Do I adjust this with the Audacity slider? Any idea what would be
a good place to start or is this one of those things that just take a bunch of
experimentation? Again, thanks you all so much.
Steve

Questions
Yah, it can be frustrating to deal with all of the options while recording
audio – no matter what you may choose as your recording platform. It’s worth it
once you practice enough.
A few basics to always remember:
1. There is a Windows default device set through “sound settings” in the
Windows control panel
2. There is an Audacity device set through preferences->devices in Audacity
3. There is a JAWS output device set with
JAWSKey+shift+control+’j’->Utilities->Sound Card
Once you master controlling those three variables you’ll be much more
comfortable with switching between them when you need, and it will seem less
daunting. I promise.
My suggestion would be to setup all of your devices on one machine while you
learn. Don’t plug and un-plug devices until you understand the tendencies each
audio device has on your system. No use adding in more variables to the
parametric equation that describes the intricacies of your system. Does that
make sense? It’s a little differential equations nomenclature that I tend to
use when there are so many variables in a situation that is really difficult to
describe.
BTW, you can leave audio input devices plugged into your system and not use
them. Sometimes it’s easier to do that so Windows, Audacity, and JAWS don’t get
confused as to what is plugged into your system. Plugging and un-plugging
devices tends to confuse the situation because the identifier that your
computer uses to locate the device changes when it is plugged and un-plugged.
Peace,
David

Questions
David,
Thanks for the scripts. Something else to learn. When I plug in the USB
device all playback comes through. I guess it must automatically becomes the
default? It’s just a small interface with input and output for recording from
a turntable. It does however have a headphone jack and volume wheel for
monitoring
. I feel like I’m close here but I’m not sure if I want to have to keep
changing all these settings again and again. Thanks for all the help.
