What shows up for Shift+I (input) and Shift+O (output device)?
If you want to monitor the level, go up to the toolbars
(Control+(Shift)+F6) and tap to the recording monitor. I think you
have to enable it by pressing the Enter key and choosing "Start
Monitoring".
If the dB rises above -60 dB, something comes through. Of course, you
still have to check that it isn't the inbuilt mic.

Gary, forgot to mention. When you unplug the turntable it would certainly
be worth checking that Audacity’s settings are where you want them. It will
probably drop to the primary sound driver which, with a single sound card is
probably ok but I prefer to set to a specific card.

Right, Gary. When NVDA gets rerouted by a USB device it is convenient to
load JAWS, which will still have the correct setting, and use it to fix
NVDA. Then unload JAWS.

Jaws works in much the same way. It is a terrible annoyance when I am adding
an audio USB device and I lose speech to. This is why I have both jars and
NVDA on my computer. When Jaws loses its connection to the soundcard, I will
then lunch NVDA and make Jaws reroute back to its original setting. You can
probably do the same with a demo version of jaws and NVDA if you have not
purchased a Jaws license.

Yes, when you connect your turntable Windows treats it as another sound
card. The same happens with USB headphones, mixers and mics. You lose
speech when you select it from NVDA because your turntable has no speaker.
What you need to do is to have NVDA using your existing soundcard and
Audacity recording from the turntable. Having connected the turntable and
convinced NVDA to output through the normal soundcard, you need to change
Audacity's input.
Open Audacity. There are two ways of making the necessary change, either
through Preferences or from a toolbar. Through Preferences:
1. Press control-p to open Preferences.
2. Press d until you get to Devices.
3. Start tabbing through the options. Leave playback on your usual
soundcard. When you get to Recording press up or down arrows until you find
the USB codec.
4. Press Enter to get back to the normal Audacity screen.
The other option is to press control-shift-f6 to get to the toolbars at the
top of the screen. Shift-tab until you reach playback and recording combo
boxes. In the recording combo box, use up/down arrows to select the USB
codec. Press Enter and press control-f6 to get back to the tracks panel.

I changed my device to my internal sound card. I noticed that when I am in
nvda settings under output I now have an usb codec. When I go to it I lose
speech again. Also when I go into audacity and try to record from my

NVDA+Control+S, once tab and there's the list to choose from.
You might need to do that for all profiles, if you have more than one.

Yep, it's normal. Troublesome sometimes, but normal.
You'll probably need to send your screen reader output to a different
device unless there is a physical headphone jack on your device. The
speech might be routed through the device.
What USB turntable do you have?
